Sales Commission Forecasting Template
Learn to forecast sales commission expense by rep, quota attainment and payout curve. Explore scenarios with CFO Help’s free calculator.
Forecast from the rep level
Start with each rep’s base salary, target variable pay, quota, expected attainment, and start date. Apply the compensation plan’s actual payout curve rather than a single average commission percentage.
Separate sales outcomes from payout timing
A forecast of earned commission is not necessarily a cash forecast. Track when deals qualify, when commissions become payable, and any true-ups or clawbacks. Keep the accounting treatment aligned with your policies.
Use three attainment scenarios
A simple sensitivity analysis might use 70%, 100%, and 130% quota attainment. For a €40,000 target variable component with a linear plan, these imply €28,000, €40,000, and €52,000 in variable pay before accelerators, caps, and eligibility adjustments.
Reconcile forecast to actuals
Each month, compare actual earned commission with the forecast, explain differences in sales volume, mix, and attainment, and update the remaining-year outlook. A transparent bridge is more useful than a single annual percentage.
