How to calculate sales commission in Excel
For a flat commission rate, multiply eligible sales by the commission rate. For example, €80,000 in eligible sales at 5% produces €4,000 in commission. In Excel, with sales in B2 and the rate in C2, use =B2*C2. Keep the eligible revenue definition explicit: bookings, invoiced revenue, or collected cash can give different results.
Commission on gross profit rather than revenue
If commissions are based on gross profit, calculate gross profit first: revenue minus directly attributable costs. For €80,000 in revenue and €50,000 in direct costs, gross profit is €30,000. At a 10% commission rate, commission is €3,000. In Excel, =MAX(0,B2-C2)*D2 where B2 is revenue, C2 is direct costs, and D2 is the commission rate.
Tiered commission calculation
For marginal tiers, each rate applies only to the sales in its band. Suppose the first €50,000 earns 4% and sales above €50,000 earn 7%. At €80,000 sales, commission is €50,000 × 4% + €30,000 × 7% = €4,100. Excel: =MIN(B2,50000)*4%+MAX(0,B2-50000)*7%. A retroactive accelerator, where the higher rate applies to all sales after a threshold, works differently.
What to check before paying commissions
Confirm whether rates apply to cumulative or monthly performance, how refunds and cancellations are treated, whether the plan has a cap, and when payments are earned versus paid. Document the assumptions so finance and sales reach the same result.
